What is in-game photography?

What is in-game photography? In-Game Photography (also known as Video Game Photography, Screenshot Photography, Screenshot Art, or Virtual Photography) is a new media art form which consists of photographing video game characters and/or environments residing in a virtual world. While it’s origin is debatable, the art form (along with it’s various names) came to prominence around 2010 - 2011 as a budding community formed around Duncan Harris and his project DeadEndThrills. The earliest known work within the art form is Eva and Franco Mattes’ Thirteen Most Beautiful Avatars. Their work was exhibited in a virtual art gallery in 2006 within the video game Second Life. In it’s most basic form, In-Game Photography is the capturing of an image with no heads up display (HUD) within a video game using the “print screen” key generally found on a computer keyboard or similar hotkey on a console game controller. From there, many tools can be used to further the practitioner’s ability to photograph

PhotoWorld China Issue #451

Photoworld China Issue #451 Taking a brief moment to announce that I was interviewed for the Chinese magazine PhotoWorld about my eight year journey through in-game photography. I also provided an overview of it’s origin, where it is now, and where it could be heading. Lastly I did my best to define what we do on both the console side of things with the use of photo modes and the PC side with using tools such as injectors, cheat engine tables, and Nvidia Ansel. I was featured alongside Eron Rauch, Zhao Chen, and Guo Yuqing who go into different aspects of photography and it’s relationship to video games respectively. In closing, I’m so honored to have been given the opportunity to have my shots exposed to an audience of China. I hope they enjoy my work and find in-game photography fascinating! My shots that were featured in this issue include Rockstar Games’ Red Dead Redemption 2, Bioware’s Mass Effect 3 and Mass Effect Andromeda, CCP Games’ EVE Online, Bethesda’s Elder Scrolls V: Skyr

PHOTOGRAPHIES: VOLUME 11, 2018 - ISSUE 2-3  A few months ago Professor Winfried Gerling of the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam contacted me requesting permission to use some of my in-game photography shots in his upcoming, "Photography in the Digital" article. The focus of his writings would be on the history of photography in the digitized reality, through practices such as in-game photography and the screenshot. This article would be published within the latest volume of photographies, a yearly journal published by Routledge Taylor & Francis Group. I happily obliged for the use of the shots and by July 19th, 2018 his writings, along with the entire journal had been completed and published to be purchasable on Taylor & Francis Group's website. ABSTRACT Photography in the digitally created or digitized reality is an everyday activity that is rarely discussed in the context of photographic debates. This refers to practices such as in-game photography or, sim

An introduction.

AN INTRODUCTION Hi there!  My name is Joshua Taylor, I've been participating in the wonderful art of photography since 2007. Most of my experience comes from being self-taught and numerous trials and errors. I started off with a humble Canon A-Series point and shoot, and shortly after purchasing it, fell in love with photography by traveling to Western Europe for a month and capturing anything and everything that interested me. That's really where my story begins with photography. Fast forward to the present day, I've practiced in various genres of photography, worked on event and product photography for local businesses in the Richmond, Virginia area, experienced the highs and lows in SLR, DSLR, digital compact, and mobile camera use. Do I consider myself a good photographer? I don't have a degree in anything art related, but I’ll let you be the judge. Most notably, in 2011 I began down a rapidly growing road within video game culture called screenshotting or screensho
